Gippsland's Toxic Horse Meat Scandal - 24 Dead Dogs
Is toxic horse meat in your dog food?
It makes you wonder what's wrong with the world when a pet meat supplier can sell toxic horse meat as "beef", kill a load of dogs, make many others sick, and simply get a tap on the wrist.
Australia needs proper pet food regulation
ABC reported earlier today that Maffra Knackery in Gippsland, Victoria, are pretty much off the hook with the indoscopine toxicity scandal in which toxic horse meat from northern states was redirected to Victoria because of COVID and subsequently sold as pet meat.
It's an absolute outrage.
What's worse is not all of the 25 horses in the consignment have been accounted for, and might be in your bag of pet food sitting in your cupboard waiting to poison your dog.
Maffra Knackery Accountability
Surely Maffra Knackery must be held accountable for selling toxic horse meat? Surely they knew what they were selling? Beef, horse - two very different animals, and totally different spelling.
Senate Inquiry into the Safety of Pet Food
It's been literally years since the Senate Inquiry into the Safety of Pet Food figured out just how shoddy Australian pet food regulations actually are. There's a working group investigating how to fix the issue, but sadly heel dragging has led to all these dogs, mostly greyhounds, suffering a terrible demise from indoscopine toxicity from the toxic horse meat.
Losing a dog to pet food poisoning
It's just a horrible, horrible thing. We love our dogs, they're well and truly part of the family, and the thought of having a happy healthy dog today and a withering-in-pain dog tomorrow just doesn't bare thinking about. Australian Pet Owners Group and Pet Food Reviews (Australia) have been alerting consumers of toxicity of pet foods for years as the recall system in place in Australia is, would you believe it, absolutely voluntary.
Is pet food in Australia safe?
We all like to support Australian companies, but truth be told without any systematic or proper regulation, regulatory body, or system in place to ensure the safety of pet food in Australia, it makes you wonder why you would buy Australian pet foods.
